Thirteen year old Daniel Hauser and his parents knew something wasn't right; something was wrong inside young Daniel's body. The symptoms were not good. They knew Daniel needed some form of medical examination or treatment, and soon.
The expected thing to do in cases like this is to go to your doctor to find out what's wrong. Usually the doctor will be able to find what's going on within a reasonable amount of time and prescribe something, whether it be a drug, an operation or therapy to make you well again.
That is, MOST of the time.
Actually, maybe I should say, SOME of the time. The mainstream medical profession does have it's pitfalls, chief among them their desire to treat symptoms rather than finding and treating the causes of illness. This practice is driven mostly by consumerism; make the patient feel better and they keep coming back, but tell them they're overweight and they'll go find another doctor that will tell them what they want to hear.
In the case of more serious illnesses and things like tumors or internal problems, the all powerful scalpel is the answer. Cut 'em open, cut it out and sew 'em back up is the motto.
In the case of cancer, of which I remind you there is NO official medical cure, chemotherapy or radiation are the only acceptable methods of treatment. Never mind that these treatments alone can kill a healthy person outright, they are the only acceptable measures as far as Western medicine is concerned and anyone who says otherwise is officially labeled an extremist.
Daniel's mother Colleen is one of those people who don't fully trust Western medicine. As far as is known, she doesn't have mental or emotional issues, she just loves her son and believes there are better treatments for him than the scalpel and chemotherapy.
But the State of Minnesota doesn't think she has a right to seek alternative treatments for her son and has mandated Daniel receive chemo, or else.
So Colleen did the only thing any distraught mother would do, she took Daniel and ran. Authorities believe the duo are headed to Mexico to receive alternative treatment for Daniel and are treating the situation as an endangered kidnapping by a negligent parent.
Doctors say there's a 90% chance that Daniel can be cured by chemo and I don't contest their views, but there's also a good chance he can be cured by more natural methods as well.
My own Grandmother suffered with ovarian cancer for 13 long years. She received just about every treatment known to man, including chemo and radiation. I watched that regal woman suffer at the hand of the culture of cancer; the sickness itself, the endless doctor visits, the fear and the effects of the treatments all had a hellish tinge to them.
She tried an operation that helped for a while. She tried a clinic in Mexico that helped her for a while. She tried small doses of chemo and radiation that helped for a while. She tried dietary changes that helped for a while, but because she could hardly eat anything she loved, was in danger of dying of starvation and not the illness. She tried everything and surprisingly, it all helped her live longer than the doctors expected.
But the key is that she thought for herself. She didn't just do things because the doctor told her so, she did things because she had studied them and because she, better than anyone else, knew how much her body could take of any particular treatment.
In the case of Daniel Hauser and his mom Colleen, she simply wanted to find an alternative treatment to the very invasive and toxic treatments of Westernized medice. The Hauser family believes that putting toxic chemicals in the body has spiritual effects and because of these religious convictions, wish to seek a non toxic treatment. However, her government thinks she has no right to seek those treatments for her child and has sided with the medical "profession" (remember, they're ALL practicing) in dictating what treatments she can and cannot seek for her son.
That is totalitarianism my friends, and as the new socialized medical system takes shape, we're going to be seeing a whole lot more of it.
I'm not knocking chemo or Western Medicine here, I myself believe we need both Western and Eastern / Natural methods to have a well rounded medical community. What I am railing against is the government getting so deeply involved in our personal lives. They have NO right to dictate what kind of medical treatment we seek.
Let's say Daniel went and got chemo, but it didn't work out and he perished. Would Daniel's parents and doctors be prosecuted because they didn't do all they could do to save his life? Of course not! Everyone knows that chemo is dangerous stuff and besides, if the all powerful doctors couldn't save him, no one could.
But lets say they went the natural route and it didn't work either and the boy died. You better believe the full force of government would come down not only on Daniel's parent's heads, but on those who treated him as well.
Classic hypocrisy.
So, next time you hear a politician spouting off about "free" healthcare, keep in mind that there will be strings attached.
Studies have found that much more can be done for health through natural preventative care than through the drastic reactionary measures espoused by our society today. Yet you won't find natural medical care on any lobbying list in Washington these days, it's just too easy to claim that because it takes longer and requires more personal commitment it's not affective.
No, compared to Luther's Reformation, America's present healthcare reform is no reformation at all, it's a strong armed wallop directly back to the Dark Ages.

That's one of my biggest fears about nationalized healthcare. I know so many people, though, who haven't thought past their wallets on this issue. They just want instant security, and aren't considering all the ramifications.
I hope those two make it to Mexico.
@Amanda_Barber - I hope they make it too
YES! Amen. Well said.
@Amanda_Barber - He who would trade essential liberty for temporary security deserves neither and will ultimately lose both. - Thomas Jefferson
Very well said...I do have to say this Daniel Hauser gives me pause in that the treatment for this type of cancer tends to have good results and is likely his best chance....that said...the current regime and what they plan to do ....as well as the gestapo tactics already in place SCARE ME!...Well done.
As I told someone yesterday, I don't think we're going to see a totalitarian nightmare until even upper-middle-class people who have insurance can't afford to go to the doctor, and that may be a while. Health care is rapidly pricing itself out of existence, like the auto industry has done and like the steel industry did twenty or thirty years ago.
This is RIGHT ON. Well said.
This story has been on my mind since I heard it on the news... very bothersome.
Scary, scary. Thanks for posting, I couldn't agree with you more. Frightening because I live in mn. I hope that many people join them in their fight and that they make it to where they want to go.
@Amanda_Barber - I know so many too!
There IS a huge problem with healthcare in America, but we have some of the best in the world. Even many Canadians come down here from their nationalized system to get care after waiting in line for years for a Dr. appointment!
I partly blame the insurance companies for expensive healthcare. But I also blame people, people who sue a doctor because they thought the doctor was infallible when it turned out he was human too. It's the frivilous lawsuits and ensuing insurance costs that are one of the biggest contributors to the problem.
The answer? Taking ownership of our own health. Feed yourself healthy and live healthy and your risk of needing healthcare drastically decreases.
@radicalramblings - Great quote! Thanks!

Yes, and like I said, I'm not totally against Western medicine. It has it's place indeed. But when the government dictates its the ONLY way, it's like the government dictating religion (which in fact they're doing with global warming... er scuse me, "Climate change".)
:)

Not to be disrespectful in anyway, but you guys sure have had your share of political craziness up there in MN haven't you? ;) First it was Ventura, then Franken and now this...
I'm joking around of course! At least there's still good people there! :) Thanks for stopping by and the comment!
@Galileo7 - Interesting point. But if the politicians keep harping on how awful it is and how awful it's going to get, don't you think they will be able to push through more drastic measures because of the people's fear?
The current administration has proven themselves to be harbingers of a doom yet to be realized and if they can manufacture a big enough "crisis", then the people will freak out and call for a change sooner rather than later.
Remember, "Never waste a good crisis!" ;)
Politicians are notorious for using fear, greed, bigotry, or whatever will work. I don't think in general the fear-mongering of this administration is in the same league as the last. Having said that, when congress gets into it God knows what will come out. A health care plan that is publicly funded and optional seems all to the good, but who knows? The lobbies are so powerful it will be a bloodbath, and little will change.
@Galileo7 -
Agreed on the first sentence for sure! The second, well it ain't over till it's over is it? :)
Funny how so many politicians enter the fold preaching against lobbyists and then end up in bed with them by the end. God have mercy!
More talking points for the discussion:
I personally believe in at least getting an opinion from Western medicine before I do anything health treatment-wise, but I also recognize that there are some of those out there who don't do that and that's fine.
But the real issue here is what role a parent plays in a child's health care.
If we want to bring the state into the issue of a parent's rights, then why not bring out the issue of abortion? If the state doesn't seem to have a problem with a mother killing her own child through abortion, why should it be concerned about what method of health care she chooses for her child?
Does this seem a viable question to you?
There's no excuse for real negligence, don't get me wrong. There is a line. But I don't honestly believe choosing natural healthcare over standardized medicine counts as negligence. If the state is going to force their will on parents in regards to their children after they're born, then it's going to have to force its will on them before they're born too. And that will never happen in our time.
What do you think?
@thetentguy - lol! That's for sure! :) I voted alllll third party this last election. :)
@thetentguy - That's a good point.
@radicalramblings - Yup.
Have you heard if they made it?
This is frightening to me. There was a family in our state, the young woman had cancer, the family wanted to leave the hospital to do their homework on it and look into other alternatives, it was very much the same scenario. The young lady is now doing fine praise the Lord but the family went through a horrific frightening time.
Our pediatrician is very involved in herbs but he will not utter a word to anyone. Our doctors are scared to death of having their license taken away. I once went to a doctor asking him about a natural medication the herbal store assured me he espoused. He thought I was a plant and railed at me from across his desk.
We are living in frightening times, any time the government get's involved watch out. That's why I hate to see homeschoolers glee when public schools allow them to participate in activities or programs...I don't understand how people can be so gullible. Yikes.

Mrs. Amelia,
The mother has voluntarily returned with her son after a week on the run. They've been forced to allow their son to receive chemo or lose custody of him if they refuse.
As much as I'm glad they get to keep him, it's pretty scary to see how much power our government now has over our everyday lives. The reasoning seems to be now, "You have freedom as long as you do what we want you to do".
As you know, a family member of mine recently went through some health issues and is still recovering from them. (BTW, thanks for the prayers!) We've taken a lot of flack from well meaning family members and friends who thought she should take standard treatment.
People are brainwashed Mrs. Amelia. Simply brainwashed. It's going to take a long time to get them "unbrainwashed", but it's possible. Already the natural medicine movement is gaining influence and credence from the public and it can only grow. As to the awareness about "big brother and sister", that's an entirely different story...
Hello,
I honestly do not know exactly how I ran into your site other than I
think we are in the same blogring. I'm not too much of a weirdo...I hope that is. Anyways, it is just nice to see
someone sharing their views on things in this way... One of my family members is also going through some medical treatments and there have been many frustrations with such a thing as this... many times she had to go to several different organizations just so that she would not have to go through unnecessary radiation also and is still doing so actually... it is somewhat crazy just how much our gov. seems to influence/ control central arenas of our personal lives. Also it is interesting to me that in many ways we have it so much better than many other countries and in some ways not at all. Anyways, just wanted to send a prayer your way...God blesses
indeed :)
